Slowing Down and Becoming More Perceptive, by Rachel Thomson

Reflections after Five Weeks of Basic Concepts Mediation

For the past six weeks, I have spent my Mondays through Wednesdays interning with Basic Concepts in Cape Town, South Africa.

However, my first exposure to Basic Concepts and mediational teaching came months earlier, when I was back home in California.

In May, I was clicking through the online mediator course on my computer in a Palo Alto dorm room; by the end of July, I was mediating Basic Concepts sessions with grade one students in a Hanover Park classroom.

Over the past four months, my understandings of mediation, education systems, child development, and South Africa have all grown.
