Namaqua Education District, Northern Cape (Phase 2): Word Knowledge Test Results

Word Knowlege Test Results

The Word Knowledge Test is a literacy test designed to determine the number of words written by learners in 15 minutes.

Children are encouraged to continue writing until the end of the test, but they are not rushed.

Spelling errors and words classified as non-sense words are subtracted from the total number of words written during the test.

Method:

Grade R learners who received the BCP intervention in 2017 were tested in Grade 1 at the end of the year (2018) - their scores were compared to a group of control learners from the same schools who were tested in 2016.

The results found that learners who received the Basic Concepts intervention in Grade R could write 25% more words than the control learners.

This is an impressive effect size (0.8) which means that the intervention learners were on average 79% better than the control group learners.
