Namaqua Education District (Phase 2): School Readiness Results

Results of School Readiness Test:

A control group of learners was tested at the start of the project (2016) when they were starting Grade 1.

The experimental learners were exposed to the Basic Concepts Programme (BCP) in Grade R in 2017 and were then tested at the start of 2018 when they were starting Grade 1.

The learners were selected from the 5 biggest project schools. 18 schools participated in the project.

The learners represented appoximately 16% of the total learner population.

The study found that a majority (63%) of the learners who received the BCP intervention were ready for school learning, while 48% of control learners were school ready at the start of the project.

We can therefore conclude that there was a significant (31%) improvement in the school readiness of the learner population.

Further testing of the learners at the end of the year will establish if these results have an impact on the overall scholastic (literacy and word writting) performance at the end of Grade 1.
