Thinking Stars: Baseline Test Results - Grade R, 2014
Part of the Project
Baseline Testing of Grade R Learners
Sixty (60) Grade R learners were assessed at the start of the fourth term.
The Test of Basic Concepts Knowledge (TBCK) was administered to groups of approximately 15 learners at a time.
The TBCK assesses the readiness of Grade R learners for formal school learning.
The results found that 55% of the learners were functioning in the average to strong range, while 45% of the learners were found to be very weak to weak.
A significant number of these learners (27) who will start Grade 1 next year will require intervention to develop the language, conceptual understanding and thinking skills needed for school learning.
