Thinking Stars @ Floreat Primary: Support Visit 2, April 2015

Support visit to Grade R teachers at Floreat Primary

The Grade R teachers at Floreat Primary have recently started implementing the BC programme and Louis and Diane went to encourage and support them. They are leading the way at the school and we hope that the other teachers will be able to learn and get support from them!

Concern around lack of time to do BC admin was raised and we suggested that they use the manual for session planning and just get going with the sessions rather than let the admin become a hindrance to actually doing the programme.

The teachers were reminded to rather drill down each step and not rush through all the steps in a session. Pace the sessions according to the children. The use of concrete objects and allowing each child to touch and explore the materials while verbalizing was also stressed.

We reiterated the importance of language usage and encouraging the learners to use the specific language (e.g. shape, rectangle, sides, straight, corners, angles, etc) when they answer the mediator’s questions.
