'When it comes to education, rural kids suffer enormous deficits with under-qualified teachers, inadequate classrooms and irrelevant curricula.'

'The Department of Education’s policy of spending six weeks in Grade One  on basic concepts was not enough.'

'In response, education specialist Louis Benjamin developed a basic concepts programme, which teaches the conceptual foundation children need to succeed at school.  Hantam students are now only one year behind the standard, despite being taught in English from Grade One.'
