Description
The project was implemented in a graduated manner starting in Grade R and extending through to Grade 3 over the three year period. All teachers involved in the project were trained as mediators of the BASIC CONCEPTS PROGRAMME. The project focused on the development of cognitive and scholastic functioning of learners as well as the systematic development of vocabulary and language.
Evaluation
The learners who entered Grade R & Grade 1 in 2008 were assessed on an annual basis until they reached Grade 3. Baseline information was also gathered from Grade 3 learners at these schools at the start of the project. The results of these learners were also compared with the systemic evaluation data of learners in the Northern Cape.
