Description

This proposed project is an extension of the Namaqua Project (a past project) to two addtional circuits in this district.

The project aims to significantly improve the quality of teaching-learning in Grade R classes in one new cluster (Boesmanland) and to complete the training of practitioners in two others clusters (Kamiesberg and Springbok) of the Namaqua District. The project is premised on the assumption that improved teaching and learning in Grade R will contribute towards improved learning in the Foundation Phase and particularly in Grade 1. The project has focussed strongly on the development of Grade R teachers as mediators of learning experiences to develop the requisite language and conceptual understanding of their learners. A team of District Officials has received training to coach and mentor these teachers in their classes.

Evaluation

Baseline data will be gathered from a sample of Grade 1 learners at the start of the project in 2013.

Grade 1 learners who participate in the Grade R programme during 2013/2014 will be tested at the start of the year to determine their readiness for learning in Grade 1.  They will again be tested at the end of Grade 1.

Comparisons will then be made between the Grade 1 Baseline data and the Intervention Group data.
