Description

This proposed project is a direct extension of the past Namaqua Projectinto Grade 1 classes in these two circuits (Springbok-Central and Hatam-Calvinia) in the district. The results of the Namaqua project have been encouraging, and it has been recommended that the project be extended in order to strengthen these positive effects.

The project aims to significantly improve the quality of teaching-learning in Grade 1 classes. Teachers at these schools will be trained to implement the BCP in their classes. The programme will be used as an intensive intervention with selected groups of learners that might still require this, but also as a tool to consolidate and extend the higher order and academic language of all learners. The focus of the project is therefore to provide Grade 1 teachers with an approach that is generalizable and relevant to their core task of teaching and assisting learners to access the new CAPs curriculum.

A team of District Officials has received training to coach and mentor these teachers in their classes.

Evaluation

Baseline data will be gathered at the start of the project (2013) from Grade 1 learners who did not receive intervention in Grade R or Grade 1. Leaners who received intervention in Grade R and Grade 1 will be tested at the end of Grade 1 in 2013 and 2014 and their results compared with the baseline sample.
