The practitioners again responded excellently to this colour revision session and introduction to shape. The project has been actively supported by the Principal of the Centre.

20 teachers at 8 primary schools and 5 ECD Centres have received classroom support over a period of three years.

The first mentoring session with the practitioners at the centre went off very well.

42 Grade R practitioners received their BCP Mediators' Certificates at an Awards Ceremony at Springbok Primary School on the 20th March 2012.

The Test of Basic Concepts Knowledge has been administered annually to Grade 1 learners since the start of the project. In 2010 baseline data was gathered from learners at all project schools.

While it took some time for teachers to embrace mediational teaching, by midway through the second year most teachers were implementing regularly and many proved to be exceptional mediators.

To become certified mediators of the BCP teachers are required to implement the programme under supervision for one year.  This includes on-site mentoring in their classrooms.

Teachers from the Metro apply to attend the BCP training and to be part of the project at their school. They are required to sign a formal commitment to implement the programme.

School and classroom visits for the purposes of mentoring and monitoring are an essential feature of the Basic Concepts Programme.
